Devonoak

Courses 2011

Come to beautiful rolling mid Devon to learn the ancient craft of timber framing. This summer a series of 5 day courses will be run at Bumpers Orchard, near Bow, to help build the massive queen post trusses of  a new workshop building. Each course will start with the basics of timber milling and quality control.

You will experience the joys of hand conversion and hand tool use and of course tool sharpening. You will discover the pleasure of working green wood; both oak and soft woods such as Douglas fir.

Students will be introduced to the theory of different marking out systems including  traditional scribing techniques such as the  “plumb bobbing” and also some aspects of square rule carpentry. You will learn to mark out accurately and cut with precision large mortice and tenon joints and scarf joints.

The  barn at Bumpers Orchard will be an interesting mix of traditional  construction and 19th century engineering principles. Finally students will help split and shave  the  green oak pegs that hold the building together.  All tools will be provided during the work  but if you have any thing you want to bring along- feel free.

The course tutor will be Henry Russell, a carpenter with over 20 years of experience of repair and  new build in traditional carpentry. The courses are suitable for men  and women of all ages and skill levels. Each 5 day course will cost £300 per person this includes lunch  and morning and afternoon tea and coffee. We can provide you with a list of local B&Bs and there are some options available for camping.

Course dates:

27th  June - 1st July
